Chapter 3

The next morning Sean awoke early and set about getting a pot of tea started. He hoped Viggo would be feeling better this morning. He’d seemed a lot better last night. They’d even gone outside for a short time and took a walk in the woods behind the cottage just before sunset.

He was leaning against the counter drinking his tea and looking out the window at the woods when he heard Viggo come into the kitchen.

“Morning. Feeling any better?” Sean asked pulling a cup out of the cabinet for Viggo.

“Much. Sean, I want to thank you for all you did. I’ve never had someone take such good care of me before,” he said as Sean handed him a cup of hot tea.

“Don’t mention it. It’s what friends do,” Sean shrugged.

“No, it’s not. None of my other friends would have done that…you didn’t see Orli or Dom beating a path over here to help did you?” Viggo mused.

“Well it’s what THIS friend does then,” Sean grinned and sat down across from him at the small dinette table, “besides you’ve taken care of me before, was only right.”

“No I haven’t,” Viggo said cocking his head sideways and looking at the blonde man for a moment wondering if he’d suffered memory loss from the fever.

“Well you haven’t nursed me through an illness but you have supported me through a tough time. It meant more to me than you could know,” Sean explained as he pushed his hand through his hair.

Viggo just nodded. He understood now what he was saying.

“So back to work tomorrow?” Sean asked.

“Yeah. Could probably work today actually,” Viggo said looking out the window at the sun coming up.

“Nah, you need another day I think. Besides we don’t get much time off on this project, you should enjoy it,” Sean grinned, “I think I’m going home this morning. I need to do some things today.”

“As much time as we spend at each other’s places you’d think we could just save time by moving in together,” Viggo said before thinking about what he’d admitted the day before. After that he doubted Sean would like that idea much. He felt like smacking his head against the table, but then Sean’s answer sent his mind reeling.

“Ya know? You’re right. Your place here is bigger than mine…maybe we could both save a bit of money and I just move in here? Besides I won’t be here the whole 18 months…seems a waste renting the place for so short a time,” Sean suggested and then wondered when his brain and his mouth lost their connection.

Viggo almost spit his tea out. “What? I was only kidding, Sean. I mean I wouldn’t mind…but after what I told you yesterday…”

“To hell with that. You aren’t going to molest me in my sleep are you?” Sean asked grinning.

“Uh…no,” Viggo said shaking his head his eyes wide. Though the idea wasn’t exactly without merit, but no he’d never do anything like that.

“Then there ya go,” Sean said with a grin. He wasn’t sure what the hell he was doing exactly other than torturing himself and his friend, but he wanted to be close to Viggo. If he couldn’t bring himself to act on how he felt at least he could be close to him. Besides at the very least it would keep him out of trouble, keep him from doing anything really stupid like he had a tendency to do after a divorce. Like hook up with another woman and get married too quickly…yet again.

“You’re serious?” Viggo asked in amazement. Sean wanted to move in with him…even after knowing that Viggo was attracted to him?

“Yeah. I don’t have much stuff over at my place…could probably get settled in here by this evening if you don’t mind that is,” Sean answered hoping Viggo would agree now that the idea was on the table so to speak.

“No…I don’t mind. I guess if you are sure.”

“I’m sure. Besides saves us traipsing back and forth to each other’s houses and saves a little money too. Share the rent and all that—maybe I can do something in that back yard of yours too. Needs someone to tend it. Besides I think you need a keeper…falling asleep on the porch when it’s freezing outside. What the hell were you thinking?” Sean scolded.

“I honestly don’t remember. I had gone for a walk, sat down on the porch and was just relaxing against the doorframe and I guess I fell asleep. Don’t know why the cold air didn’t wake me. Guess I was just that tired,” Viggo said laughing a little and feeling a little more relaxed than he had moments ago.

Apparently Sean wasn’t bothered in the least by Viggo’s confession the day before. Though a man as handsome as Sean had probably had the same thing happen to him before. He like Viggo wasn’t about to let something like that ruin the friendship they had built.

They were both mature adults, Viggo could control his desire for the other man--he had all this time anyway. Besides he looked forward to having someone there with him on a more permanent basis, he liked his solitude but he did get terribly lonely sometimes. Sean even when he was there was never like a guest, never intruding on his time, and often times Viggo would write, or draw, or paint and Sean would watch a game on TV or just read. They would chat about all sorts of things while they shared their separate interests in the same space. They both were lonely he supposed, and just needed to know someone else was close by that cared. It might be a little odd to some people, but then again no one had ever accused Viggo of being normal.

“Well it’s settled then, I’ll go home and pack up my things. Like I said there isn’t much,” Sean said as he got up and set his empty cup in the sink.

Viggo felt like a tidal wave had just washed through the house and carried the rest of his sanity away with it.

Three days later Viggo was sitting in the cafeteria tent waiting for Sean as Orlando sidled up to him with his lunch.

“So Sean moved in with you? Way to go,” Orlando whispered. He knew about Viggo’s feelings for Sean.

“It’s not like that, Orli. We aren’t--we are just roommates. Sean just decided to move in, save money and all. He won’t be here the full 18 months so he figured it would be better this way,” Viggo explained.

“So you didn’t tell him how you feel?” Orlando asked dumping more salad dressing than was absolutely necessary on his poor salad.

“Yes…sort of. He said he didn’t care as long as I didn’t molest him in his sleep,” Viggo answered frowning.

Orlando let out a huff of laughter and shook his head. “He said that? How fucking funny! But he didn’t tell you he had any return feelings huh?”

“None other than friendship…guess I’ll take what I can get. At least this way I can be close to him. Besides we were always at each others houses anyway or out at the pub together…seemed logical to just move in together,” Viggo answered.

“Are you sure he doesn’t have feelings for you? Maybe he’s in denial because well he looks at you like you hung the moon ya know?” Orlando asked curiously.

“We are just friends,” Viggo said shaking his head and hoping this conversation would end soon.

“Alright, but…well, never mind. None of my business anyway I guess,” Orlando said taking a bite of his drowned salad.

Viggo looked up and saw Sean walk in scanning the tent as if looking for someone and their eyes met. Sean smiled widely at him for a moment then went over to get his lunch. It was obvious to any observer that Sean had found who he was looking for.

Orlando had seen the exchange and shook his head before taking another bite of salad. To steal a line from Sam these two were hopeless…completely hopeless, he thought.
