The Kitchen Witch --------------------------------------------------------------- [Chapter 1] [Chapter 2] [Chapter 3] [Chapter 4] [Chapter 5] [Chapter 6] [Chapter 7] [Chapter 8] [Chapter 9] [Chapter 10] [Chapter 11] -------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 9-Chess When he got back in and put the ice cream away he grabbed his phone and called Sean. He told Sean about his morning and Sean was nearly as pissed off as he was at this Brad fucker. Then around three o'clock someone knocked on his door. Viggo was in his painting clothes an old t-shirt with paint all over it and jeans that had even more on them along with a great number of holes and he didn't have any shoes on. When he saw the gray headed Police Chief standing there he thought great he is going to just love Viggo the hippie. "Mr. Mortensen?" The Police Chief asked. "Yes sir?" Viggo answered. "I am Police Chief Gordon, I need to speak with you about this tape that Maria Martin brought to me." The old man said as he took in the other man's attire. "Sure, come on in...excuse my appearance I was painting." Viggo said motioning for the old man to sit down. "Quite alright." The old man said taking a seat. "Would you like some coffee or something?" Viggo asked. "No. I'm fine. So you were at Sarah Johnson's when the call came...um was she there at the time?" He asked taking out a notepad. The man didn't waste time. Viggo rubbed his hand over his face. He thought about how much detail the police really needed. "Uh no I had just finished the breakfast dishes and Sarah had already left for the café. I was just about to lock up for her when the phone rang. I hesitated and wondered if I should answer it then I heard the machine come on. I started back to the door then I heard this moron going off. I felt like my feet were made of lead I just stood there listening to this asshole rant and rave and the things he said about Sarah just kept making me more and more angry until finally I lost it and picked up the phone. I shouldn't have I know but aww hell you would have done the same right?" Viggo relayed the tale to Chief Gordon. "Yep probably would have, Sarah is a sweet girl and doesn't deserve the shit that man has put her through." Chief Gordon said then. "You were also right about him violating his restraining order...I should call Sacramento police and have his ass picked up but Maria and Sarah both protested that. What do you think?" The chief asked. "I agree with you, but it's not my call...it's Sarah's." Viggo said running his hand through his long hair. Damn didn't realize it was getting so long. He thought to himself. "Growing it out for a role?" The chief asked noticing the look on the younger man's face. "Huh? Oh the hair...no actually just left it from the last role...played a cowboy." Viggo said grinning figuring the old man would appreciate that. "Cowboy huh?" The old man asked. "Yep, got to shoot in some really beautiful places. Even bought the horse I rode in the movie, I have several horses on a ranch back in Idaho." Viggo had no clue why he was telling this old police chief this but the man was so friendly. Then he thought it must be easy for criminals to confess to the guy. "Hmm always liked horses myself. Well I wanted to warn you although you got him on tape threatening Sarah...you also have yourself threatening him ya know." The old man said tapping his pencil against his notebook. "Never thought of it that way...of course I won't go seeking him out...but if he does come here and does try something...well I am not backing down on anything I said." Viggo said finally. "Didn't figure you would." Chief Gordon said smiling. "So you and Sarah were having breakfast together?" Viggo frowned. "Umm I don't think that pertains to the tape." The chief chuckled then. "Nope don't guess it does." "Well even though I am a little late, welcome to the island. I'll let you get back to your painting." Chief Gordon said standing up. "Thanks." Viggo said offering his hand to the old man. They shook hands and Viggo saw him to the door. "Oh one more thing." Chief Gordon said turning and Viggo nearly laughed. Who did he think he was Colombo? The old man caught the amused look in his eye. "Sorry always wanted to say that...I was wondering how much you know about Sarah's marriage if you can call it that. On the tape you called him a wife beater and you also referred to how he kept it from the press...I know he is some big shot TV producer and all. Bradley McIntire does a lot of family shows...this sure is a hell of a way to be producing family stuff by day and then going home and beating the shit out of your wife. When I talked to my Sacramento contact that they had indeed had a few domestic calls from neighbors of theirs but she would never press charges. That doesn't bode well in the event of us having to arrest him. He might just be able to weasel his way out of it." Chief Gordon said then. "Are you saying that the police can't dig something up but the Hollywood press might be able to? Trial by media?" Viggo asked grinning viciously. "I never said anything of the sort. But give me a call if you read anything in the papers." Chief Gordon said then grinned and winked at Viggo when he handed him a business card. Viggo laughed. "Nope you never said a word." Viggo replied smiling and nodding his head. As soon as he said goodbye to Chief Gordon he went to the phone and called Sean. "Hello?" A sleepy voice said. "Shit...didn't realize the time, sorry Sean...I need your help." Viggo said quickly feeling awful for waking his friend. "It's ok...what do you need?" Sean asked sitting up in bed. "You remember Pamela that red headed reporter that was all legs? The one you had practically eating out of your hand at the last press junket?" Viggo asked. "Oh yeah I remember Pamela alright, she worked for the L.A. Times and she was a lot more than legs." Sean said wickedly. Viggo laughed. "Jesus I didn't need to know that...I need a favor from her if you haven't already ruined that for me...do you still have her number?" Viggo prayed that Sean did. "Uh yeah man I do...what the fuck's going on?" Sean asked. Viggo explained his plan to Sean and he loved it. "You are evil when you want to be Vig...remind me never to get on your bad side." "Never get on my bad side...now please Sean can you do this for me?" Viggo said then. "Damn begging...you never beg...ok, ok I will give her a call right now. Shite no rest for the wicked eh?" Sean said sliding out of bed and going to his desk to retrieve his address book. After Viggo got off the phone he called Chief Gordon using the number he wrote on the back of the card he had given him. "Hi Chief Gordon...its Viggo Mortensen." Viggo said into the phone. "Yes what can I do you for?" The chief knew why the young man was calling, though he was surprised it had only been an hour since he left the cottage. "Let's just say that I called in a favor and the ball is in play." Viggo said grinning. He'd always wanted to say something mysterious like that in real life. "Ah I see...well let's just see how far it bounces. Thanks for letting me know." The chief said grinning. "You're welcome." Viggo said then hung up. He was nearly giddy when he finally went back to the room he was using as a studio and began painting again. He considered buying a TV just for this occasion...but the papers would have to do. Someone was knocking on his door. When he got there Maria greeted him. "What have you done?" She asked grinning. "What do you mean...don't tell me you can read my mind from across town?" Viggo said opening the door wider and stepping back to let her in. "No I can't...and that's what is bugging me. I have a weird feeling though...like all hell is about to break loose." She said crossing to the couch and sitting down. "Well I hope that it stays where I put it then." Viggo said picking at some dried paint on his index finger. "What are you talking about?" She asked. "All hell is about to break loose for our good friend Bradley McIntire." Viggo said unable to keep from grinning. "Oh really? And how is that?" She asked sitting back and regarding the man before her that seemed wound so tight he was about to burst. "Chief Gordon simply made a suggestion...and I followed through on it...called in a favor is all." Viggo said shrugging his shoulders. "You are an evil man, Viggo...you realize you are about to ruin a man's career?" She asked leaning forward. "Would much rather have his head on a spike but I will take his career. Mr. Family Entertainment is about to be brought down by his own stupidity is all...no one can hide things like this from the press forever. Even without an anonymous...or not so anonymous tip, they are tenacious ya know. Particularly when dealing with someone as stupid as him." Viggo said smiling. Maria laughed. "So who are the players on this chess board of yours my King? Besides the police chief and now me?" Viggo doubled over with laughter. "My King? Shit, Maria. My friend Sean and a reporter friend of his." Viggo admitted. "So let's see...all the pieces are in place but have you told the Queen yet?" She asked. "Uh no...don't want her to know." Viggo said then and sat down on the coffee table in front of Maria he took her hands into his. "Promise me you will not tell her." "I won't...but you should before it starts hitting every media outlet around." Maria warned. Viggo nodded...was there a way he could have an out of body experience during that conversation? He had seen flashes of the temper that Sarah tried to keep reigned in from her years of having to hide it but he was afraid when she finally let loose heads were definitely going to roll. Particularly his. Maria smiled at the look on Viggo's face and shook her head. "You are in love with her aren't you?" Viggo looked startled and then said, "Yes." "You need
to tell her that too." Maria said standing and crossing to the
door. "I have to get back to the bookstore and Sarah should be
here any minute...good luck my liege" She said stepping out the
door just in time as a pillow from the couch sailed across the room
and hit the door then bounced. Maria laughed all the way to her car.
