Chapter 10

Viggo was just about to enter the hospital when Elijah ran up to him with a huge smile plastered on his face from ear to ear.

“Viggo! The doctors have moved Sean to a different room, and taken him off some of the monitors. They said he’s probably going to wake up soon. They said after the last CT scan they did early this morning they saw some increased brain activity and they said that is usually a very good indicator. We just have to be patient just a while longer and wait for him to finally wake up but they said all indications are that he will be just fine. They also took him off any kind of meds, so once they work out of his system he may just wake right up!”

Viggo felt as if his knees had turned to Jell-O as the boy wrapped his arms around him and pulled him into the hospital.

Soon…Sean would wake up soon, after seventeen days. Viggo decided he wouldn’t be leaving the hospital at all until Sean woke up.

When he entered Sean’s room Peter and Fran were smiling for the first time in a long time.

“Looks like I’ll be giving New Line a call and telling them they will NOT be replacing our Boromir after all…Doc says it’s just a matter of time, maybe just a day or two. That his brain is waking up, that with other similar cases it’s usually no more than thirty-six hours from the time they notice the increased brain activity. They also said there should be no memory loss, that he should be right as rain, just a little weak and tired from being in a bed immobile for so long, we can work with that!”

Viggo felt as if his heart my fly out of his chest. He wanted to thank God and whatever other deities existed for this. Now they just had to wait…but this time they had true hope!

-----------------------

Sean woke up with a splitting headache. “Shite,” he mumbled as he rolled out of Faramir’s bed, “Don’t suppose anyone around here has some aspirin?”

He slowly set about getting himself ready and made his way downstairs to breakfast. When he arrived in the dining hall Arwen, Gandalf, Merry, Pippin, Legolas and Gimli were there. No sign of Aragorn, Boromir or Frodo and Sam.

He nodded to Arwen who smiled sweetly at him, “Come sit beside me, Sean.”

Sean walked over and sat down next to the lovely elf. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, just a headache,” Sean said softly.

Arwen looked at him and then to Gandalf.

No one spoke of those who were missing.

After breakfast Arwen invited Sean to join her on her morning walk in the garden. “The hobbits and I often walk there. It reminds them of the Shire. We have an herb there that might help your headache. It is bitter but eases the pain.”

He nodded gingerly because it hurt too much otherwise. Sean noticed that Pippin and Merry were keeping unusually quiet, afraid to be too noisy. The man was obviously in pain.

As they walked Arwen stopped in front of a small bush with waxy looking leaves and broke off a few. “Here, chew these, they will help.”

Sean did as she asked and after a few minutes the fierce throbbing began to recede slightly to at least a tolerable level.

The headache was a product of hearing the noise of his world and this one mixed together. He found at times he had to strain just to hear what people were saying to him over the din that seemed to be in his mind.

“Thank you. Where are Frodo and Sam?” Sean asked falling into step beside Arwen.

“They are with Aragorn and Boromir,” Pippin answered speaking for the first time. Arwen smiled down at the hobbit.

Sean smiled as well, “Good.”

As the group walked Sean began to feel weaker than he had in a long time, he asked Arwen if they could sit down for a while. She stared at him for a moment as he collapsed down onto a bench and then she said, “By the gods, Sean, you are fading! Pippin, Merry go quickly get Gandalf!”

The two hobbits took off running as fast as their little legs would carry them. As they ran they met with Faramir and Pippin continued on calling for Gandalf as Merry informed Faramir.

Faramir in turn summoned a number of guards and this of course brought Legolas and Gimli from the library.

A rather large group was gathering around Sean when Gandalf arrived with a breathless Pippin at his heels. Soon after Aragorn and Boromir were racing through the gardens with Frodo and Sam in their wake toward those gathered around Sean.

“Sean?” Aragorn called dropping to his knees next to the man whose head was cradled in his wife’s lap.

“I think that I’m going home,” Sean said sadly.

Boromir stood gaping at the man who was literally fading before their eyes his skin turning pale and translucent.

“Did I do something wrong?” Boromir asked Gandalf worriedly but the wizard smiled at him.

“No, not at all. You did something right, you have let go of your guilt. Just as Sean is fading the shadow at Amon Hen is as well,” Gandalf informed them.

Aragorn gathered Sean’s hand in his own, “I will not forget you.”

Sean smiled, “Nor I you.”

“Quickly now, everyone better say their goodbye’s because the time has come---goodbye dear Sean,” Gandalf said smiling.

The hobbits all said their goodbyes with tears running down their small faces, Arwen’s tears dripped on Sean’s forehead as she whispered her farewell. Gimli and Legolas voiced their farewells, and then finally Faramir and then Boromir stepped into Sean’s line of sight. .

Faramir spoke first bidding him farewell and then Boromir spoke, “Goodbye, Sean.”

“Goodbye and thank you, Boromir.”

Aragorn looked down at the man fading away and smiled sadly, “Tell Viggo.”

He knew exactly what he meant. “I will.” With that the world went black.
-----------------------------------------------

Sean felt as if he were swimming in a black sea, he struggled against the current and a loud rumbling sound like a jet passing just a few feet over his head sent him reeling again. Finally everything seemed to calm, and he could see light and hear a familiar voice speaking softly.

He called out to him, “Viggo!” but he couldn’t reach him, and the other man couldn’t hear him. Sean cried out several more times, and finally he awoke trembling, his eyes opening to bright lights that stung causing him to blink several times.

He gathered his voice again and tried to call out but his voice came out barely above a whisper, “Viggo?”

Viggo shot out of his chair beside Sean’s bed sending the book he was reading skidding across the floor.

“Oh my God you’re awake!” Viggo cried out clutching Sean’s hand in his own.

Sean tried to smile though he wasn’t sure he was able to, he felt numb.

“Viggo?” he asked again barely able to get the word out.

“Yes, Sean, I’m here…I’m right here.” Viggo said with tears streaming down his face as he hit the nurses call button.

One of the nurses came in and then ran back out of the room and back in quickly dragging the doctor with her.

When the nurse and doctor came to the bedside they asked Viggo to step out for a minute but Sean started shaking his head.

“No,” he whispered, his throat very dry and coughed. “No.”

His hand clamped tighter to Viggo’s and the doctor glanced into the frightened eyes of his patient.

“Ok, he can stay, Sean, but you are going to have to let him go for a moment so we can examine you. Ok? We won’t make Viggo leave if you don’t want him to,” the doctor explained softly. He knew some patients awoke disoriented and frightened, plus they hadn’t expected him to awake quite this soon, the drugs they used to sedate him during the CT scan that morning hadn’t completely worn off yet. He had been thrashing again and they had to sedate him in order to do the scan. What they found thrilled the hospital staff; they just had no idea he would wake this soon. They thought it would be at the very least another six hours.

Sean reluctantly released Viggo’s hand but he wouldn’t take his eyes off the other man until the doctor asked him to please look at him and follow his fingers. Sean did, they finished their examination and then the doctor turned to Viggo. “I’ll send a nurse in with some ice chips, he’s probably pretty parched. I don’t want the others to come in just yet. He doesn’t need too much attention this soon, are his mother and daughters still here?”

Viggo shook his head, “No, she uh, she went back to her hotel for a shower, she slept here last night. The girls stayed with Miranda.”

“I’ll give her a call then,” The doctor said as he exited the room.

Viggo stepped back to Sean’s beside and immediately Sean clasped his hand in his own.

“Vig…” he tried to speak but Viggo shook his head.

“Hang on, Sean. Just wait till the nurse gets here with the ice chips. You been out for seventeen days you know that? Scared the hell out of all of us.”

Sean closed his eyes for a second and felt Viggo’s hand tighten on his. He popped his eyes back open to prove he was still with him. His brain was muddled and he was having a hard time focusing on anything for more than a few seconds.

The nurse came in with a cup of ice chips smiling brightly at Sean. “Good to see you back with us!” she said handing the cup to Viggo and patting his arm.

Sean attempted to smile weakly at her, and then she pressed a button on the end of the bed so he could sit up more.

He looked at Viggo and released his hand so the other man could feed him the ice chips.

“Here, just a few,” Viggo murmured sliding the spoon into his mouth. Sean sighed, damn it felt good just to have a few ice chips, felt like he had his entire sock drawer stuffed in his mouth.

After about four or five spoons of ice chips Sean was able to really clear his throat.

“Damn,” he said softly and Viggo smiled at him.

“Vig, I…” Sean began but just as he started to tell him how he felt and what he had seen while he was unconscious the door burst open and his mother and daughters came in.

Before Sean could say anything Viggo had slipped from the room not wanting to get in the way of Sean’s family.

Damn.
