11] [Epilogue] Chapter 7 Sean was grumbling something about hard to find wizards as he passed through a corridor leading to the gardens. Is something wrong? Pippin asked cheerfully as they met in the hall. Not really, I was looking for Gandalf but I keep just missing him, Sean explained. Ah, he is a slippery one sometimes. I think he is still in the gardens though, Pippin answered smiling. Thank you, Pippin, Sean grinned turning and heading for the gardens again. Sean stepped out into the sunlit gardens and sighed, finally hed managed to track down the elusive wizard. There you are. Did you know you are a difficult person to find? Sean asked strolling over to him. Gandalf chuckled. Am I? Why were you looking for me? I have a question. Then by all means ask it, Gandalf said smiling at the way the man seemed to be hedging at something. I want to take a trip, to to Amon Hen where Boromir died. I feel like there is some reason that I need to go there. Im not sure why exactly, not like it will bring him back or anything, but some part of me feels that I really must go there. Sean explained. So what is your question? Surely you arent asking my permission to go? Gandalf grinned. Sean smiled. Well no, Im not but Id like you to come with me that is if you would. And also to keep it a secret from Aragorn, I dont think he would handle seeing me at Amon Hen very well considering Sean drifted off. Gandalf nodded and stroked his beard for a few moments considering what the man had said. I agree that Aragorn probably would not handle seeing you standing on the same ground where Boromir was lost. Who else would you like to include on this journey? Gandalf asked. I was thinking Merry and Pippin, they seem a bit bored and Ive always enjoyed their company. Plus they were there. Sean explained. Ah, well so was Legolas for that matter. Perhaps he and Gimli as well? Why dont we ask the whole Fellowship, Gandalf? Sean growled. Gandalf laughed, Fine, Merry, Pippin, Legolas, you and myself will go. How does that sound? Sean nodded. Now what do we tell Aragorn? You just leave him to me. Gandalf answered with a grin. ------------------------- Viggo watched the doctor as he examined Sean again. Ya know little is really understood about a deep state of unconsciousness like this, but we have learned that stimulation is very important. Gives their brain something to focus on, even if we dont see that it is helping it is. What you and your friends are doing is exactly what you should do. You know once when I was just a resident there was one patient, a young woman. Shed been struck by a car and was in a coma for three months. One doctor would stop by her bed and say she would never wake up. When she finally did wake up she remembered everything he said and told him off good and proper while the rest of us bit our tongues to keep from laughing, the doctor explained smiling. So dont give up hope, its only been four days. Viggo sighed; it felt like much longer than four days. The doctor finished examining Sean and wrote some things down and then walked out again. Viggo settled back in the chair and began reading aloud again where he had left off. Ian would be coming in soon to relieve him so he can grab something to eat. They were all taking turns, reading, talking, and in Elijahs case inflicting every band in his CD collection on the poor man. If Sean remembers that hes probably going to choke Elijah for forcing him to listen to some of it! -------------------------- Sean was sitting at a small desk tapping his fingers against a book in a familiar rhythm but wasnt sure exactly what it was. Seemed he had a song stuck in his head by one of those dreadful bands Elijah played all the time. He was brought out of his thoughts by a soft knock at his chamber door. Sean opened the door to find two hobbits and an elf there. I see Gandalf has talked to you, Sean said stepping aside to let his companions in. Yes. Are you absolutely certain you wish to do this, Sean? Legolas asked cautiously. Im certain, Legolas. None of you have told Aragorn have you? Nope! chorused two hobbits and Sean smiled then looked at Legolas. No, I have not but I think you are wrong for not telling him your plans. I have no plans other than to go there. Beyond that I havent a clue. I just know that something tells me I need to go to Amon Hen and I suspect until I do Ill never be able to get back to my own world. Sean answered. Legolas sighed. He didnt want Sean to go back because that meant Aragorn would again be heartbroken. So when do we leave? Merry asked plopping down on the big bed and setting his pack beside him. Pippin did the same. As soon as Gandalf gets here, Sean answered picking up his pack and setting it on the small desk. Legolas where is your pack? Gimli has it, he is going to travel with us as far as Anorien, the elf explained. Do not worry, he will keep our secret. Im not worried, Sean lied. He was worried. Aragorn was gone with Faramir to Osgiliath and he was worried that when he returned and found theyd left he would come after them. He didnt believe Gandalfs letter would do much good. Aragorn was a very stubborn man when he wanted to be. A few minutes later another knock sounded at the door and Sean answered it. Gandalf and Gimli were there. Everyone ready? Gimli asked gruffly as he handed Legolas his pack. They left the city on foot following the North-South Road for a short time before turning away from it and heading into Anorien. That is where Gimli left them to return to the White City. He wished Sean luck and hugged Legolas and the hobbits before turning back. He was glad they hadnt invited him to go along. He would help keep Aragorn from following them if he could, besides the dwarf did not savor going back to that damnable place. From that point the trek was uneventful for the most part and they walked leisurely, there was no great need for speed so they took their time. It took two more days before they crossed the Entwash and by weeks end they came to the Falls of Rauros. By the seventh day they had arrived at Amon Hen and Sean wondered what the hell had driven him to come all that way for a bunch of trees. That was until he heard a man laugh, not so unlike his own laugh and he swore he heard two high pitched female voices giggling. Legolas had spun around drawing his bow as his eyes scanned the woods and Sean knew he hadnt been hearing things. As if by instinct he pulled the hobbits close to him and whispered, Stay behind me. Merry and Pippin nodded and drew their little swords and Sean drew the one Gandalf had given him. Gandalf was the only one who didnt seem to be preparing for battle. He stood leaning on his staff looking curiously at a rise above them. A few seconds seem to stretch into eternity and then they saw a man come over the rise and start down the slope toward them. Boromir! He walked in front of two tiny women walking side by side. They seemed to wobble rather than walk in their long gowns, certainly not gowns suitable for a walk in the woods, but there they were. Boromir was dressed in black boots and breeches and a dark green tunic and leather vest with his Elven cloak still fastened with his Lorien brooch. It was indeed Boromir, Sean felt like he was back in the make up trailer looking in the mirror! The man even had his sword at his side and his shield at his back. Boromir! the entire group breathed and the man stopped. Hed been distracted by whatever the little women had been saying but before he could draw his sword in defense he recognized the people gathered there. Merry and Pippin immediately dropped their swords and raced out from behind Sean toppling the man as the two women gaped at them. You were dead! Pippin cried burying his face in Boromirs chest. Boromir laughed. The two women tittered. Not dead. One chirped. No, most certainly not dead. The other chirped a half a beat later. Gandalf was unsure what to think of the scene before him. Aragorn would have known if Boromir had not been dead. He surely would never have sent him over the falls if he were alive. How is this possible? Legolas asked walking up to the man he thought to be lost. It is a long story, Master Elf. Boromir smiled accepting his hand to stand back up. He then pulled a stunned Legolas into his embrace. It is good to see you! I do believe we have plenty of time for a long story, Gandalf answered smiling at the blond man who seemed more relaxed than hed ever seen the man. Then you owe me one as well wizard, we all thought you were dead too, Boromir answered releasing his hold on the elf and taking the wizards hand in a tight clasp. Another time perhaps, there are more here who want to hear your tale. Boromir smiled and then his eyes alighted on the golden haired man standing back from the group still clutching his sword. He felt as if he were staring into a looking glass. Who are you? Boromir asked curiously. My name is Sean Bean, Sean explained unsure where to start. Gandalf smiled and took up explaining his presence. Over the course of the next hour Gandalf attempted to explain Sean to Boromir as well as he could and soon the entire group was settled around a campfire, which Legolas had built. Sean was still at a loss. Boromir was alive? He cant believe Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli would have sent him over the falls if hed been alive! Something wasnt right about this, and who were those strange little women? They seemed awfully fragile to be traipsing about the woods. Both of them very small and thin, and they were obviously identical twins. They both wore similar dresses, one red the other blue, with lavish brocade, and both had black hair tied up in a tight bun atop their heads. So tell us, what happened? Pippin asked Boromir curiously. Boromir smiled, I think Lady Cora and Lady Clara could explain that better. I still dont know the full story myself. I only regained my memory about two months ago. That is why I am here; I seemed to be drawn here. Once Id found whatever it is that drew me here I planned to return to Minas Tirith. Sean shivered slightly. Hed had that same feeling of being drawn to this place. He wondered what it meant. Perhaps Gandalf would have some answers. Lady Cora and Lady Clara looked up when Boromir said their names and smiled at the man. Will you tell us then? Pippin asked settling next to Merry. Tell you what? Cora asked and was immediately punched in the arm by Clara. Tell them about the young lord silly, Clara scolded. Oh. Cora answered. Boromir just smiled at the two women and shook his head. To say his rescuers were odd was an understatement but hed grown used to them over the last year. They came across as absentminded and silly, but they were quite intelligent when they wanted to be. Theyd certainly saved his life. Well you see magic is not exclusive to Elves and Wizards, Clara stated haughtily and Gandalf smiled. So that was it. Magic, he knew Aragorn would not have released Boromir over the falls if the man werent dead. Dont gloat, Clara. Its not becoming, Cora warned and the other sister frowned. We were walking, Cora continued. Yes, walking near the Entwash, Clara added with a smile. Yes, the Entwash gathering herbs. Cora added with a nod. Yes, and we saw the boat, caught in the eddies, Clara stated. Oh yes, such a pretty boat. So I went up to it, Cora stated. You did not, I went up to it! Clara argued turning to look at her sister. We both went up to it. Cora snapped turning back to their audience. Very well we went up to it and saw the young lord. So pale. Clara crooned. Oh yes so very pale, Cora agreed with her sister. Sean felt a headache coming on and looked at the others. Boromir seemed amused just listening to the ladies, while Legolas was just staring at the strange little women. Merry and Pippin were completely enthralled leaning with their elbows on their knees and their chins in their hands listening to every sound the women uttered. Sean caught Gandalfs eye and the old wizard smirked and winked at him. They were in for a long story it seemed. Sean turned his attention back to the eccentric women hoping they were going to explain all of this, hopefully sooner rather than later, but he had little hope of that already. He was still alive, Clara said. Yes, but not very, Cora added. No, not very. Orc poison and wounds like that. Not very much alive. Very mostly dead some would say, Clara explained. Some would say he was dead indeed! Orc poison slows the body and nasty wounds, yes. He should have been dead, but he wasnt. Not yet. So we decided to take him home, Cora stated. Yes, to nurse him. We do that you see, thats why we were gathering herbs, Clara explained. We poured some of our special tea into his mouth, twasnt much but it was enough. We couldnt lift him, or the boat, Cora said shifting on the log they were sitting on, the skirt of her gown billowing a bit. No. He was far too heavy; we couldnt even drag it, the boat that is. Not even with our rope. So we asked a friend to help us, Clara explained. A friend? Legolas asked curiously. Oh yes, a very big friend indeed! Cora crooned with a giggle. A very, very big friend, Clara giggled with her. Sean sighed and looked over at Gandalf again who gave him a look he understood to mean just be patient. When he looked back Boromir graced him with a similar look. The man had lived with these women for nearly a year; he was accustomed to their strange way of telling a story. Who was your friend? Merry asked and Sean nearly groaned dont encourage them, he thought. Oh dear Cora, Ive forgotten his name, Clara said in a sad voice pressing a finger to her pursed lips as if deep in thought. Greenroot, silly. That is his name, Cora answered frowning at her forgetful sister. Oh yes, Greenroot! He is an Ent, Clara answered waving her finger triumphantly. Yes, and our friend. He came and picked up the boat ever so gently and then picked us up, and carried us home to our cottage on the far side of the Entwash. Cora explained. Greenroot is so very strong, and so much faster than we are. He is a birch I believe, Clara said thoughtfully. No he isnt! Hes a walnut! You know that! Cora snapped at her sister. Sean rolled his eyes, two nuts in a walnut tree how fitting. Gandalf almost seemed to read his thoughts because he snorted. Merry and Pippin both smiled broadly. We have a friend who is an Ent too, his name is Treebeard. Oh yes, we know of him! The sisters said in unison then giggled. Oh now where were we? Clara asked. Sean took that moment to finally say something, You had just gotten back to your cottage. He hoped that might speed them along a little bit. Oh yes, thank you, the two women chimed. When we arrived, first we undressed him, Cora answered. No we did not, Cora! Clara snapped, you are telling it all wrong. Fine you tell it. Cora snapped back. Fine. I will. Clara answered with a sharp nod. First we got him out of the boat with Greenroots help. Then we undressed him, and then Cora made a poultice to draw out the poison, then we dressed his wounds, and then we wrapped him in blankets. Clara explained. Yes, but we had trouble undressing him remember? So we took a knife and cut his clothes away, Cora interjected. Such a fine specimen we uncovered, Clara blushed. Yes, quite fine, Cora blushed and giggled. Boromir cleared his throat shifting uncomfortably as he blushed all the way to the tips of his ears. The two women took up their story again ignoring his embarrassment. Well you see we bandaged his wounds and wrapped him in blankets, Clara continued. He was very sick with a fever for over a week, Cora nodded sadly. When he woke up after the fever broke he didnt know who he was, and we certainly didnt know his name. So we just called him young lord, Clara said smiling. Weve cared for him ever since, until he remembered, Cora answered. So here we are now. Thank God! Sean thought glad they were done with their agonizingly slow story. Boromir looked up and his green eyes caught the mirror image of Seans. So thats how Im here. I was dead by most peoples standards, just not Cora and Claras, Boromir smiled. Are the ladies coming with you to Minas Tirith? Legolas asked. No, their cottage is on the way so they will go home and I will continue home myself. Now that I know where home is. They just accompanied me here because they thought I could use the company coming back to a place filled with such disturbing memories now. Wish I hadnt remembered everything, Boromir answered tugging at a frayed tunic edge. You shouldnt feel guilty about that, Pippin began. Yes. This is the place where I betrayed the Fellowship; I tried to take the ring. I betrayed my friends, and almost got you and Merry killed! Boromir barked angrily though the venom was directed at himself. You redeemed yourself though. I was there, Boromir. You redeemed yourself, you were and are an honorable man, Legolas assured him. Cora and Clara exchanged glances and then stood. We should get some sleep. We will be going home in the morning. They announced in unison, which always seemed to unnerve Sean. ----------------------------------------- The hospital staff told him they didnt think it would be much longer, usually movement like that meant soon. Everyone from the cast and crew and of course Seans family were very excited and praying the doctors and nurses were right. Viggo found himself staring at a particularly poor watercolor outside the cafeteria when Ian stopped beside him. How are you holding up? Ian asked softly. Fine, Viggo lied. Ian smiled at him and sighed, You arent a very good liar for an actor, Viggo. This elicited a snort from the younger man. Im fine, tired, and worried like everyone else, but today has been good hasnt it? Yes, very good news. Hell be awake before you know it, Ian reassured putting his arm around his friend. His heart went out to him; he knew how much he cared about Sean. Now wouldnt be soon enough, Viggo answered leaning into the embrace. I know. Ian wished he could do or say something more, but there was simply nothing to say. Go to Chapter
